Most everyone has used a gumball machine. You put your coin in the coin slot, turn the crank, and a gumball rolls down the chute. But…have you tried to draw one? It is easy when you follow the 5 steps in this tutorial.

Step 1: Start with a rounded shape for the globe and two lines coming from the base of the shape for the machine.

Step 2: Add a top to the globe, along with a coin slot and doorway on the machine. Close the base of the machine with curved lines as shown.

Step 3: Draw a series of overlapping small circles inside the globe. Note: The size and number of gum balls may affect the length of time this step takes!

Bonus note: Gumballs don’t float!

Step 4: Add coin slot and knob. Draw a light layer of the to the top of the globe, the machine, and the gum balls. Press harder with the pencil to darken the doorway to indicate depth.

Step 5: Blend tones. Add highlights to top of globe and side of machine as shown, keeping one side in subtle shadow. Darken areas of the coin slot and knob details to create the illusion of depth. To quickly fill in the gum balls, shade using tight pattern of circles inside each gumball that gets smaller and smaller, leaving a white highlight near the center left of each.

Note: Press hard for some, light for others to vary tone. One you get the hang of it, they take seconds to complete each one! Don’t for get the overlap! This will change the motion used when creating some of the shaded gumballs.
