STEP ONE
Pencil sketch for composition While the initial rough sketch usually takes the least physical time of the whole painting process, it can take a considerable period to settle on the right composition before putting pencil to watercolour paper.
STEP ONE
Pencil up the drawing on paper, making sure that all line work is accurate in terms of perspective and other details such as shape and proportion. It helps to lightly rule straight lines, to give the true location of long edges (such as rafters).
STEP ONE
The initial pencil sketch is purely to place important features. I really draw with the pen. If I have trouble getting it right, I will trace onto a clean piece of paper. I like to get the pencil rubbed out as soon as possible because it annoys me.
STEP ONE
I trace the completed drawing onto a piece of tracing paper and transfer it to the Clayboard. For this example, I put a piece of graphite paper (shown here) under the tracing paper and lightly traced over my lines with a ballpoint pen. I am careful not to press too hard because it will indent the clay.
STEP ONE
Firstly, choose a suitable image for your scratch art. Convert the image to greyscale on a computer, as this will help to show the highlights and shading.
