A coiled piece of steel wire, sharpened at one end with a catch plate at the other, is what we know as a modern safety pin. Use shapes connected to one another that will become a continuous line in your safety pin.
Step 1: Start with a small circle with a long, diagonal line coming from it. Add a smaller circle slightly above the end of this line but not attached. Take 20-30 seconds for this.

Step 2: Draw a line parallel to the diagonal line drawn in step 1 that touches the small circle. Draw another line on the right, moving away from the original diagonal line. Do this in 30 seconds or so.

Step 3: Draw a small circle inside of the large circle as shown. Draw another circle around the outside of the small circle seen at the bottom of the drawing. Add a parallel line to the line drawn on the right. Continue this line around the base of the small circle as shown. Take 30 seconds or so for this.

Step 4: Draw the head of the safety pin using small lines as shown.

Step 5: Quickly block in the first layer of shade. Erase the parts of the large circle that are no longer needed.

Step 6: Smooth tones with a bending tool and erase any smudges inside the lightest areas to indicate metallic highlight.

Extra time: Deepen shadows and lighten highlights to add contrast. Add a shadow beneath the pin to indicate a surface.
