This small handheld tool with a curved scoop is used for lifting plants or earth. Use the scumbling technique to add realistic-looking soil as you end this tutorial.
Step 1: Draw a long diagonal line as a guide for the handle. Add a long “L” shape at the end of that line and close the “L” with a curved top

Step 2: Draw lines around the guideline drawn in step 1 to create a handle. The bottom of the handle can be curvy. Draw a curve beneath the shovel head to indicate depth. Draw two thin lines between the shovel and the handle to connect the two shapes.

Step 3: Erase the original handle guideline as it is no longer needed. Add an ellipse near the top of the handle. Add an outline of dirt in the shovel head. Rim the shovel head with contour lines to add an edge.

Step 4: Fill in the shovel and dirt with a backand-forth motion with the pencil. The dirt, handle edges, and under the shovel should be darker than the other parts.

Step 5: Smooth tones with a blending tool. Add contrast on handle by making the base slightly darker, leaving the very bottom edge lighter. Fill in the hole and shovel edges with dark tones. Create a dirt texture inside the shovel head, using more pressure on the left side of each hill to indicate a light source.
