The umbrella can be used for either protection from severe weather elements or from the sun. Its collapsible design makes it easy to transport. You won’t be caught without one during the next bout of extreme weather when you have your drawing pencil ready!
Step 1: Start with a downwardfacing arrow. The center of the arrow should have an upside down “J” shape for the handle. The tip of the arrow can have a tiny rectangle for the umbrella point.

Step 2: Use the “J” guideline to create an upside down block letter “J”. Draw some lines that fan out between the arrow as shown.

Step 3: Erase the center of the arrow drawn in step 1, as it is no longer needed. Draw two parallel lines from the “J” portion of the handle to the umbrella portion. Draw curves around the handle as shown.

Step 4: Add a light layer of tone to the umbrella, making it slightly darker on the “J” and inside the curves closest to the handle.

Step 5: Using a heavier pressure with the pencil, add tone to the fannedout lines drawn in step 2 keeping the tone lighter as it moves toward the roundest part of the curve. This will add the illusion of depth.

Extra time: Use a kneaded eraser to remove pigment from the left side of “J” handle and the lightest parts of the umbrella to create more contrast.
