To grow into an adult, butterflies go through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larva, also known as a caternillar spends its time eating and growing. Try drawing your c.

STEP 1-Draw a long line that curves downward toward the left for the top of the body. Add a scalloped shape as shown for the bottom of the body. Notice that the scalloped lines are smaller inside the left curve.

STEP 2-Draw curved lines to separate the body into segments, adding curves coming off the head and rear. Add small, rounded rectangular shapes for legs.

STEP 3-Follow the curves drawn in step 2 to create a striped pattern, that curves around the length of the body, following the cross contours. Alternate short and long stripes using a combination of jagged and curved lines. Add a stick beneath the caterpillar for a surface.

STEP 4-Using the edge of the pencil, add a light layer of tone to the top and bottom of the caterpillar body, pressing harder on the outside edges of the feet while darkening the antenna as well.

STEP 5-Fill in the stripes to create contrast.

Extra time: Blend tones with finger or blending tool for smooth transition. Make dark areas darker and erase some areas of highlight to create more contrast and interest.
