1-Lightly sketch the head and shoulders of the dog. Indicate the placement of the eyes, nose, and mouth.
2-Sketch out the animal’s rough portrait. Draw the shapes of the eyes, nose, and mouth.
3-The subject has fur, so you can be a little rough with your strokes. Using an H pencil, render out the area where the shadows and mid-tones lie.
4-Render the darker area. Blend the mid-tones into the shadows for soft edges.
5-Finish by blending out mid-tones to light, leaving the paper visible where there’s area of highlight or major light.Keep harder edges in areas like the skin wrinkles of the bulldog.
6-Detail the facial features and contrast with some darker values. Then add some individual hairs. For the dog’s pattern, rough it in with some loose, broad pencil strokes.
7-Rough in a value for the background. If things look too harsh, smudge them a little to soften the edge.
8-Go back in with a white marker and add some life to the portrait with highlights. Areas around the nose and mouth are wet and often reflect light; same with the eyes.Focus on a wet area, such as the nose, and observe how light and shadow interact with it.
