The first step is to draw the scene. The key point is to start at eye level and then draw your objects relative to that. What do I mean by this?
The first step is actually deciding on your subjects and elements. This is then developed into a composition or layout that you are happy with.
Before I began the drawing, I washed the paper blue and let it dry completely.I accurately drew the swamp hen in first – from a series of photographs and some live sketches
Mix a thin wash of Raw Sienna, remembering that watercolour dries lighter. Wash in sky area. Mix mauve in a slightly stronger consistency than sky wash.
I trace the drawing lightly on to my watercolour paper. Tracing eliminates erasing any pencil lines on the watercolour paper, which can damage the paper’s surface.
STEP ONE
I sketched a simple drawing to identify the main shapes.
Prepare the surface i.e. stretch the paper. With 185gsm paper I generously spray each side with water, allowing time for it to absorb and for the paper to buckle.
I usually enlarge my original drawing on my photocopier to the correct size, ready to be transferred onto the 78 x 54 cm stretched piece of 300gsm Arches watercolour paper.
